What is the Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Company and Worker Program?

Through the establishment of its Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Company and Worker Program, NETA has taken a leadership position in support of the NFPA 70B maintenance requirements.

This qualification program responds to the ANSI-approved NFPA 70B Standard, making proper electrical equipment maintenance mandatory and enforceable. The program is designed to meet the anticipated demand for vetted, qualified electrical equipment maintenance companies and workers. The vetting process includes a company review and the testing of electrical maintenance workers.

Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Company (QEMC):
Awarded to companies that have been thoroughly vetted and approved by NETA.

Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Worker (QEMW):
Awarded to company-employed workers who have successfully passed NETA’s qualification exam.




QEMC REQUIREMENTS

A Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Company (QEMC) has submitted a QEMC application and completed a standardized organizational review process, administered by NETA, including:

  • Appropriate Business license in state work is performed
  • Review of the company's maintenance capabilities
  • Confirmation of a standard-compliant safety program
  • Verification of a routine equipment calibration program
  • Confirmation of electrical equipment maintenance experience and quality service business operations
  • Examination and confirmation of a minimum number of company-employed electrical equipment maintenance workers




Why become a qualified Electrical equipment maintenance company (QEMC)?

Facility owners and operators are aligning their electrical maintenance programs with the NFPA 70B Standard requiring that maintenance be performed by "qualified electrical workers." 

Facility owners need to provide proof of their maintenance workers’ qualifications. Facility owners hiring electrical contractors will choose service providers based on their ability to verify and be assured of the qualifications of a contractor and its workers.

The new Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Company and Worker Program is administered by NETA and provides third-party assurance of a company's and its worker's maintenance experience and knowledge.

QEMW EXAM INFORMATION

QEMW REQUIREMENTS

A Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Worker (QEMW) has passed an exam, administered by NETA, verifying their knowledge and expertise in performing routine electrical equipment maintenance services (See the Detailed Content Outline document for details). These routine maintenance services support the advanced, electrical testing services specified in the ANSI/NETA Standards, performed by NETA-Certified testing technicians at NETA-Accredited independent, third-party testing organizations.

To be eligible for the QEMW exam you must meet the following prerequisites:

  • 2nd Year Electrical Apprentice or Equivalent
  • 100 Hours of Technical Training 
  • Completed NFPA 70E Safety Training
  • One-Year of On the Job (OTJ) Experience

NETA QUALIFICATION EXAM INFORMATION

To be able to sit for the QEMW exam, your company Point of Contact (POC) will work with NETA to complete the authorization required to in order to schedule your online exam via Pearson OnVUE. There are strict technology requirements that must be pre-vetted before the day of your scheduled exam. Click the link above for specific details. 

WAITING PERIOD FOR RETAKING THE EXAM

If a worker does not pass their exam, they must wait for 60 days before they can be authorized to retake the exam. When workers are interested in retesting, they must communicate directly with their POC who will work with NETA’s Member Services Team to re-authorize.
